Flood Mitigation in Freetown
With the start of the rains, a flood-management plan, launched by Freetown City Council (FCC), is intended to reduce flooding in the city and lessen the humanitarian, health and economic impact on its residents.
Sierra Leone is noted for having the highest annual rainfall in Africa. In the last 15 years, four major floods have affected over 220,000 people across Sierra Leone and caused severe economic damage. Freetown is particularly flood-prone and annual average flood damage in the capital city has been estimated to be as high as US$2.5m a year
